Building interiors should be healthy as well as beautiful. This energy efficient Passivhaus also sets a benchmark for indoor comfort and the highest indoor air quality. Even when windows are closed in the winter months, perfect levels of air humidity protect the occupants from elevated levels of bacteria, viruses and asthma inducing contaminants that are common in the warm, damp air of many conventional centrally heated homes. A passivhaus is designed to be health-enhancing. It is free from cold drafts and cold, damp walls. Condensation is non-existent.

I've been prompted to prepare this blog posting after Mark Elton highlighted a blog entry by Mel Starrs on a new group of housebuilders calling itself the 'Futures Group'. This group includes Taylor Wimpey, Barratt Homes, Bovis, Redrow, Miller and McCarthy & Stone and they have produced a report that tries to put a brake on the forthcoming improvements required in the UK Building Regulations.

At the end of its first Winter, these results are better than we would have dared hope for. Mayville Community Centre is also performing better than design, although it should be noted that these results are preliminary as not all the offices have been fully occupied.

A full report will be published soon.

Making Building Design’s Top 50 UK Green Leaders at number 49, Justin has been recognised by his industry peers as an early leader in the adoption of the Passivhaus standard in the UK, with his work on affordable Passivhaus standard homes noted as “promising to be particularly valuable”.

We were delighted to receive a shortlisting for six of our projects in the inaugural Greenbuild awards in three categories: Domestic New Build, Domestic Retrofit and Leisure Buildings. The Greenbuild awards aim to, ‘recognise excellence in sustainable buildings, with a particular focus on those projects that can illustrate an understanding of the importance of building performance in use’.
